Life aboard S/Y Radiance

Meet the crew

Five people. A shared love of the sea. Meet the team who bring every Radiance voyage to life.

Sam Kempson

Sam Kempson

Captain & Expedition Leader

British–Irish · English, Spanish

Captain Sam is the embodiment of the adventurous spirit onboard S/Y RADIANCE. With over 13 years in the maritime industry, more than 200,000 ocean miles logged, and a career that has taken him to some of the world's most remote destinations, he brings an extraordinary blend of seamanship, leadership, and expedition expertise to every charter.

Originally from the UK, Sam's professional journey began in the British Army, where he developed the discipline, resilience, and calm leadership style that have become hallmarks of his command. Since then, his life has revolved around exploration, sailing, and expedition cruising, taking him across the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Australasia, and beyond. Along the way, he has captained sailing yachts, managed complex refit projects, and led scientific expeditions in some of the planet's most untouched environments.

Working with organisations including Sea Shepherd and Sea Legacy, Sam has participated in pioneering conservation missions in Baja Mexico alongside scientists and National Geographic filmmakers, searching for elusive whale species and documenting marine ecosystems in remote waters. A qualified Rescue Diver and accomplished underwater photographer, he has spent years helping guests discover the underwater world safely, capturing extraordinary moments beneath the surface as well as from the air using his extensive drone and camera equipment. More recently, his experience leading expedition cruises throughout Fiji has given him an exceptional knowledge of the region's reefs, islands, and hidden anchorages.

“I feel so fortunate to be able to use my experience as an expedition crew member on National Geographic cruises here in Fiji. Our guests are able to experience the magnificent underwater landscape of some of the top reefs on our planet. Divers, snorkellers, and shore explorers alike are so happy with the underwater and drone photography to take home with them.”

What truly sets Sam apart is his passion for sharing these experiences with others. Whether introducing guests to an untouched anchorage, explaining the incredible marine life beneath the surface, planning bespoke adventures ashore, or simply swapping stories over dinner, he has a natural ability to make every voyage feel personal and unforgettable.

Warm, approachable, and endlessly curious, Captain Sam's enthusiasm for exploration perfectly reflects the adventurous spirit of RADIANCE, ensuring every charter is as inspiring as the destinations themselves.

Ellie has always loved bringing people together through food. From experimenting in the kitchen as a child to pursuing a career at sea, cooking has remained her greatest passion, allowing her to combine creativity with her love of travel, sailing, and meeting new people.

Whether she’s setting a beautiful table, helping guests enjoy a day on the water, or jumping in on deck during docking, she brings a positive energy and easy-going nature to everything she does.

When she’s not onboard, Sara is happiest outdoors, kayaking, paddleboarding, skiing, hiking, or exploring the archipelago of her homeland Sweden on her own boat. She also loves visiting vineyards around Europe and spending quality time with friends and family.

New Zealander · English

Growing up in New Zealand, Billy has spent most of his life on or around the water. His professional sailing career began in a rather unique way, joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as an onboard journalist and camera operator, helping produce a documentary while sailing one of the toughest legs of the race from Rio de Janeiro to Brisbane. Experiencing life at sea in such an immersive way sparked a passion that has shaped his career ever since.

Over the past decade, Billy has sailed everything from classic gaff-rigged yachts and prestigious superyachts to high-performance racing yachts, including skippering a 12 Metre yacht at the World Championships in Helsinki. He loves sharing the experience of sailing with guests, whether that's getting hands-on with the sails, exploring a hidden anchorage, or introducing them to life on the water. A qualified Dive Instructor and keen watersports enthusiast, he's just as happy below the surface as he is on deck.

Away from sailing, Billy enjoys hiking, mountaineering, skiing, golf, rugby, and discovering new places whenever he can. Friendly, knowledgeable, and naturally engaging, he brings an adventurous spirit and genuine enthusiasm that perfectly complements life onboard S/Y RADIANCE.

Charles Tivers

Charles Tivers

Engineer

British · English

Charles has always enjoyed understanding how things work. Growing up in the UK, he built a career in engineering, spending more than eight years as a gas engineer before swapping houses for yachts and turning his lifelong love of the sea into a profession. Practical by nature and happiest with a toolbox in hand, he enjoys the satisfaction of solving problems and keeping everything running exactly as it should.

Life on a sailing yacht suits Charles perfectly. He enjoys the variety each day brings, whether maintaining the yacht's engineering systems, helping hoist sails, launching tenders, or lending a hand wherever it's needed. Calm, resourceful, and quietly dependable, he's someone the crew can always rely on and guests quickly feel comfortable around.

Away from the engine room, Charles enjoys being outdoors and on the water. He has a passion for sailing, loves exploring new coastlines, and is always looking to expand his engineering knowledge as he works towards his Engineering Officer of the Watch qualification. Friendly, down-to-earth, and always happy to share a story or answer a question, Charles is an important part of the close-knit team that makes every voyage onboard RADIANCE feel relaxed, safe, and enjoyable.

Manta research in Fiji’s Northern Lau Group

Radiance hosted SeaKeepers South Pacific, Manta Project Fiji and Manta Watch NZ for a joint research expedition. The owners donated a week aboard, supporting drone and in-water surveys around Duff Reef and Vanua Balavu’s Bay of Islands.

No manta rays were encountered during the expedition. SeaKeepers reports that the surveys nevertheless contributed useful scientific information. This is a reminder that research is about careful observation, not guaranteed encounters.

How we are shaping future voyages

We are building a programme with marine biologists and NGOs that gives guests a deeper connection to the places we visit. Each science-led experience will be designed around a genuine research need and the specialists available for that voyage.

01

Learn from specialists

Explore the possibility of onboard talks and field briefings with marine biologists, connecting the day’s discoveries with the wider ocean story.

02

Take part thoughtfully

Where a project allows, guests may help document observations or learn about survey methods under the research team’s guidance.

03

Follow the work

Our aim is to share expedition updates and partner reports, showing what was observed, what was learned and what questions remain.

Optional New Zealand charter enhancement

Aotearoa’s hidden deep reefs

Discover the marine world beyond normal diving depths. Our South Island sample programme proposes hosting a team of two to four researchers to survey selected deep-reef habitats using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

Guests could watch live underwater footage, meet the scientists and hear informal briefings as the work unfolds. Participation can be tailored: learn alongside the research team, take part where appropriate, or enjoy your private holiday while the scientists work behind the scenes.

This is a proposed optional enhancement, subject to confirmation with SeaKeepers and the research team. Researchers require accommodation aboard and dedicated time for ROV launch, operation and recovery. Guest capacity, costs, survey locations and any itinerary changes must be agreed before booking.

Scientific partners and guest activities are arranged for specific voyages and are subject to research priorities, permissions, conditions and specialist availability. These experiences are being developed and are not included automatically with every charter.
